Cold air pricked at Evie's wrists; beneath it, a new heat gathered on her skin as if from a stone left long in sunlight. She had built a room to keep the world out, and somehow the world had arrived anyway, lying there, watching her.

He stood not as a machine made of parts, but as a new native — sheathed in a warm, pearlescent alloy that seemed to drink the light. His eyes held the calm of a placid ocean.
